If you’re looking for the perfect winter destination, look no further. Beaufort, South Carolina has easily become one of favorite little towns. With its old-fashioned southern charm, Spanish moss, waterfront views, and the best seafood dishes, it’s hard not to fall in love with this place. Beaufort is definitely a must-see.
There was never a shortage of great food here. I have several friends who either grew up in Beaufort, or are currently living in Beaufort. So when it came to ideas on places to see and things to eat, I had a lot of help. One of the most popular suggestions was The Chocolate Tree. If you’re into sweets, this place is for you. This small chocolate shop is packed full of every sweet treat you can imagine. Fudge for days, y’all! We snatched a whole box worth of goodies. And since I’m not much of a sweets person, it actually last quite a while.
Beaufort has such amazing southern charm. The small-town feel adds a sense of community whether you’re a resident or not. As soon as you begin walking the streets, it feels like home. There were many days that Jon and I would drive into Beaufort, park, and then just aimlessly walk all the streets. Spanish moss hangs from every tree. Some of the oldest trees span the width of the entire street, and remodeled historic mansions line the coast.
Beaufort also has a waterfront park. We spent a lot of time just sitting on the swings and staring out at the water. You can watch the sail boats come and go, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many waterfront restaurants. One of our favorite places to eat was Plums. Situated right along the water, you can eat either inside or out. And if they happen to be serving She Crab Bisque that day, snag it. You won’t be disappointed.
If you’re not the walking type, no worries. You can tour Beaufort via horse and carriage. Tours run daily, and you’ll get a wonderful view of the town while learning about all of its fantastic history. We preferred walking, though. I tend to like to stop for picture a lot. I mean a lot. Walking allows us to take as much time as we’d like.
If you’re into old, rundown buildings, we would highly suggest checking out the Old Sheldon Church in Beaufort. It’s very much a tourist attraction, but another must-see. There were even food trucks set up across the street from it. If we had known that, we wouldn’t have gotten lunch beforehand. This old church in Beaufort is literally just walls now. But the history behind it makes it so beautiful.
Beaufort, South Carolina is definitely a great winter destination. The temps are mild. The salty air is plentiful. The history and charm is undeniable. So if you’re a snow bird, I would put Beaufort on my list if I were you.
