If you’re looking for a great sight-seeing adventure, look no further. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida offers many picture-taking opportunities. From wildlife and beautiful landscapes, to national landmarks such as the St Marks Lighthouse, there’s something for everyone to love here.
Shortly after entering the park, you’ll find yourself pulling the car over every two seconds. This place is the avid bird-watcher’s dream! And if you go to St Marks National Wildlife Refuge and don’t see an alligator, you’re doing something wrong.
We spent a few hours touring the entire park. The Welcome Center was very well-done. Complete with a small wildlife exhibit where kids can interact with buttons and telephones to learn more about the creatures they’ll be seeing in the park. Simple, but very useful for families with kids.
We spent most of our time, however, at the St Marks Lighthouse. It was so gorgeous and peaceful. There are multiple walking paths that are easy, flat walks along the coastline. And if you’re feeling adventurous, go ahead and slip those shoes off. You can walk yourself through the muddy grassy fields lining the coast and take a stroll through the warm water.
There are plenty of great spots to snap a pic of the Lighthouse. The inside of the Lighthouse and living quarters are currently being remodeled. The hope is to eventually allow visitors to walk up into the structure. An added perk for visitors, for sure.
We no sooner left St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, and we were already talking about going back. My suggestion, take your bicycles. The flat, paved road would make it an easy and relaxing ride through the park.
And if you happen to be hungry after leaving the Refuge, be sure to hit up Ouzts Too! It’s a great little dive bar with outdoor seating just a mile from the entrance to St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to grab yourself some of the fresh-shucked oysters. SO good. =)
