If you’re looking to experience a truly unique beach town, look no further. Key West certainly provides its fair share of charm. Trust me, it’s well worth the 3+ hour drive off Florida’s mainland.
As far as camping goes, don’t expect to be pinching your pennies. Campgrounds, on average, can cost upwards of $100 a night to park that RV of yours…and that’s not even for waterfront spots.
For our short, 2-day stay, we were lucky to find a spot at any campground in the Keys on such short notice. That campground ended up being Boyd’s Key West Campground. We settled for paying $110 a night for a back-in, inland spot. And let me just say, don’t expect to have much breathing room. They pack you in there like sardines. By far, the most nervous I’ve been directing Jon as he backed into a spot.
However pricey, Boyd’s was an extremely clean and friendly campground. So clean, that Jon and I actually took advantage of their in-ground pool one evening for a surprisingly private sunset swim. Bath and shower houses were very well taken care of. And as a full-time RVer, you come to appreciate when a campground provides clean amenities for their campers.
Our first night after arriving in Key West, we made sure to hit up Mallory Square for the nightly Sunset Celebration. Being entertained by street performers and enjoying fantastic food while watching the sun set over the ocean is an experience I’m glad I didn’t go home without.
We walked ourselves up and down Duval St., which is pretty much where all the action is on any given night in Key West. We enjoyed an absolutely fantastic meal at Willie T’s, an outdoor bar with great live entertainment.
The next day, we took our time walking around town more and hitting up some of the touristy things such as the Southernmost Point in the Continental US. Although we weren’t able to take advantage of everything Key West has to offer during our short visit, rest assured that there are plenty of attractions there to keep anyone busy.
And if I can make one suggestion, I would highly recommend planning ahead for your visit to Key West. And especially when it comes to campgrounds, you’ll undoubtedly have a better shot at booking a cheaper rate. But honestly, who cares because you’re in Key West…am I right?!
